Making English Iowa’s official language is one step closer to reality. The Senate State Government Committee approved the move yesterday. A handful of opponents sat in the committee room, wearing badges that read “No English Only.” Kathleen McQuillen, a Quaker, was among them, pressing for a public hearing on the issue. McQuillen isn’t giving up. She says they will be bringing petitions to both the House and the Governor’s office. Supporters of the bill say English is already the official language for conducting business in Iowa, and the law merely clarifies that’s the policy.
