February 23, 2001 By admin

The State High School wrestling tournament has moved into the quarterfinal round. Defending champion Lewis Central entered the tournament as the team to beat in class 3A and that has not changed. The Titans advanced nine wrestlers into the quarterfinal round and all but two will compete in tonight’s semifinal round, which will make for a busy night for coach Keith Massey who will rely on his assistants and try to be in the corner for as many as possible. Massey admits it is a nice problem to have. Iowa City is second and the Little Hawks advanced four into the semifinal round which will include a couple of head to head matchups with the Titans. rounding out the top five in 3A it is Cedar Rapids Kennedy, Urbandale and Iowa City West. One of the best matches of the afternoon took place at 103-pounds in class 1A. Trailing 4-0 at the start of the third period, defending champion Mack Reiter of Gilbertville Don Bosco turned over Underwood’s Dan Davilla to record the fall in a battle of unbeatens. Reiter says he knew he needed back points in the third period to have a chance. Also in 1A, top ranked Kris Thayer of Odebolt-Arthur scored a take down at the end of the first period enroute to a 5-2 victory over second ranked Dustin Hinschberger of Belle Plaine at 125-pounds.
