An on-line mapping system is being unveiled today that will allow Iowans to plot deaths from a variety of cancers county-by-county along with areas where there have been environmental problems. Jim O’Hara is executive director of Health Track, a public education project based in Washington D-C.The mapping system plots cancer mortality data nationwide by color schemes and allows the user to zoom in on any state and any county. O’Hara says it also shows the locations where there have been reports of toxic chemical releases of known or probable carcinogens.O’Hara hopes this tool will be used by health care professionals and by average citizens to better understand what’s happening in their communities. The website is located at “www.health-track.org”. The map charts cancer mortality rates from 1970-94 as provided by the National Cancer Institute. The environmental plots come from the U-S E-P-A.
