President Bush will meet this afternoon with Senator Chuck Grassley to give the Iowan a briefing on the budget plan he’ll present to Congress tonight. Grassley says he expects the President’s spending proposal to do many positive things for the economy at once.Grassley says the Bush budget plan will reduce the national debt and still allow government spending for important programs to grow, while providing Americans with much-needed tax relief.Critics, including Iowa Senator Tom Harkin, a democrat, say the Bush plan will only offer significant tax savings to the rich. Grassley, a republican, says that’s simply not the case. He says the average family earning 50-thousand dollars a year will get a 50-percent tax cut.Grassley says the one-point-six trillion dollars in proposed tax cuts over the next ten years is “a spit in the ocean” compared to the predicted 28-trillion dollars in government income over that same time.
