Iowa men, Drake and UNI women face key late season games

March 1, 2001 By admin

The Iowa Hawkeyes need wins as the regular season heads into the final weekend. It begins tonight at home against Penn State. Iowa will close out the regular season this weekend against Wisconsin and the outcomes will go a long way toward determining Iowa’s N-C-A-A tournament fate. Iowa coach Steve Alford says slowing down Penn State is their top concern. The Drake women look to claim at least a share of the Missouri Valley Conference title tonight at Wichita State. The Bulldogs have won their last 13-games and after tonight will close out the regular season at Southwest Missouri State on Saturday. The Bulldogs are 15-1 in the Valley but the toughest road swing of the season stands between them and the title. Drake Coach Lisa Stone says the key to their surge has been balanced scoring virtually every night.Still in the hunt for third place in the Valley, Northern Iowa is at home against Indiana State. The Sycamores are 6-10 in the conference race but U-N-I coach Tony Dicecco says he is concerned about this matchup. Dicecco says Indiana State has improved and has been consistent as of late. Dicecco says with the conference tournament approaching this has become a big game.
