Iowa’s harsh winter is causing some evergreens in the state to turn brown. Black Hawk County Extension Director Larry Loenser says you may notice brown spots on your evergreens. The trees are losing moisture through their needles and that’s causing them to turn brown. Loesner says the harsh winter is likely to blame. The changes from freezing to thawing weather and the sun shining on the plants causes the discoloration. He says some evergreens are more susceptible than others to the problem. Loenser can’t say if the brown color is permanent. Loenser says your local plant nursery can help you with questions about the problem.
