The teacher pay plan under consideration at the statehouse will provide bonuses to teachers, based on how well students are doing in the classroom. The sticking point, however, is how to judge student performance. Senate President Mary Kramer, a republican from West Des Moines, says student performance will likely be judged by looking at scores on the Iowa Basic Skills test, checking attendance records or reviewing a portfolio of classroom work. Two national experts on teacher pay testified before lawmakers earlier this afternoon. Kramer says the final details of the teacher pay plan might be ironed out sometime this week.
