The presidential campaign of 2004 has begun in Iowa. This past weekend, the first of many democrats who may run for President came to Iowa. North Carolina Senator John Edwards spoke to law students, professors and judges at Drake University on Saturday. Edwards downplayed the significance of his appearance.Four of the past five presidents have been Washington outsiders. Should he decide to run for President, Edwards says his status as a Senator won’t be an impediment. He says working in Washington, D.C. doesn’t mean you can’t understand what real people’s lives are like.Edwards says to be successful, the Democratic Party must stay focused on the day-to-day worries of Americans.Last week, President Bush called for a new era of civility in Washington. Edwards says democrats have a responsibility to work with the new President on areas of agreement.Edwards, who is 47-years-old, is trial lawyer who was on Al Gore’s short list of potential running mates.
