The University of Northern Iowa is looking for a new men’s basketball coach. UNI Athletic Director Rick Hartzell said today that coach Sam Weaver has decided to resign after three years at the helm. Hartzell says they sat down and look at all aspects of the program and through that process, Weaver decided to resign. The Panthers finished the season with a 7-24 record and Weaver had a 30-57 overall record. Hartzell says community support had waned with the record and that made it tougher to raise money to build a new arena.Hartzell says, though, the team’s record wasn’t the only issue in the decision to make a change.Weaver came to U-N-I from Iowa State University where he was an assistant under Tim Floyd. Hartzell believes the program can make a quick turnaround with new leadership.Hartzell says he’ll begin the search for a new coach immediately.
