The U.S.D.A. is going ahead with plans to take StarLink corn out of circulation by buying up all corn containing “Cry-9-C” protein from seed companies. Iowa Senator Tom Harkin does not think the move will effect the price or availability of seed corn for Iowa farmers’ spring planting. The genetically-modified StarLink corn found its way into the food supply last year, though it was not approved for humans to eat, only livestock. This should end the debacle for the specialized corn, while Harkin says the science that created StarLink has learned a great lesson and will advance.Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley says this season’s seed needs to be thoroughly examined so farmers aren’t forced to go through more confusion like last fall. Grassley said, in a prepared statement, “Farmers have the right to know what they’re buying.”
