A genetics researcher at the University of Iowa opposes the cloning of humans, which scientists today in Rome said they’ll attempt in an unidentified Mediterranean country. Dr. Mary Hendrix, a U-of-I professor of anatomy and cell biology, says the technology simply hasn’t evolved far enough yet to attempt human cloning. Dr. Hendrix is president of the Federation of American Society for Experimental Biology, representing 70-thousand investigators in the U-S. In today’s announcement, U.S. and Italian scientists say they want to clone babies to help infertile couples have children. In addition to the outrage from religious leaders, Hendrix says there is much sensitivity to this issue from the scientific community.Hendrix says “we’ve all fantasized about” the many potential future applications of cloning. But while exciting, she says this research has to come with extreme caution.
