The Boy’s State Basketball Tournament opened this morning in Des Moines with the quarterfinal round in class 1A. Top-seeded Pomeroy-Palmer wasted little time in taking command against Iowa City Regina. The Knights poured in 21-points in the opening quarter enroute to a 74-58 victory in the 1A opener. Junior guard Nick Ford led Pomeroy-Palmer with 28-points as the Knights hit 55-percent from the floor in the opening half. Ford made six of nine shoots in the first half. Regina coach Gary Close says his team was unable to establish an inside game in the first half. Pomeroy-Palmer hit 55 percent from the field in the opening half and also forced 14 Regal turnovers in building a 40-19 lead at the break. The Knights take a 24-0 record in the 1A semifinal round. Regina ends its season with a mark of 16-10.Lynnville-Sully outscored Treynor 8-5 in overtime to post a 62-59 come from behind win. The start of the fourth quarter proved to be the turning point. Trailing 44-33 at the end of three quarters, Lynnville-Sully opened the final frame by outscoring the Cardinals 17-4 capped off by Brad Simmons basket with three-45 remaining to give the Hawks a 50-48 lead. Treynor coach Jerry Christensen says a trio of three pointers by Lynnville-Sully at the beginning of the fourth quarter changed the complexion of the game.
