Harkin says disease outbreak abroad should help U-S producers

The outbreak of hoof-and-mouth disease which is forcing the slaughter of millions of animals in other nations could work to the advantage of U-S producers, according to Iowa Senator Tom Harkin. Harkin says it could help the live stock market in the U.S. Harkin commends U-S-D-A officials for acting quickly to keep out meat exports from the 15-nation European Union. Travelers from Britain and other European countries are being asked if they’ve been on European farms. If so, their shoes are disinfected and baggage is being checked for contraband meat products. New reports show hoof-and-mouth disease has turned up in livestock in Saudi Arabia and in Argentina.
