A member of Ireland’s Parliament gets to do something in Iowa this weekend that his fellow citizens won’t get to do back in Ireland. John Dennehy, a member of Ireland’s Parliament, will ride in Emmetsburg’s St. Patrick’s Day parade on Saturday. Parades have been cancelled in Ireland, due to the outbreak of Hoof and Mouth disease.Dennehy says there have been no reports of Hoof and Mouth disease in the Republic of Ireland, but his country was taking no chances. He credits strict border controls which prohibit the importation of cattle, sheep or swine from Great Britain, where the outbreak started.Dennehy says in addition, public events like rugby matches with Wales and Britain were called off, and all St. Patrick’s Day parades in Ireland were banned.
