The Johnson County Board of Supervisors has voted to remove a “Ten Commandments” monument from the courthouse lawn. The Iowa Civil Liberties Union asked that it be removed.I-C-L-U director Ben Stone says three Johnson County residents complained to the I-C-L-U about the monument, which was donated to the county in 1937. Stone says he’s glad the issue was resolved without a court fight.Stone says the monument is shaped to resemble the stone tablets Christians and Jews believe Moses carried down a mountain after a “conversation” with God. He says it clearly violates the constitutionally required separation between church and state because the monument ALSO features an American flag and a bald eagle.
