Iowa basketball coach Steve Alford refused to confirm or deny interest in the Indiana coaching job during his weekly radio show last night. A committee at Indiana appointed to hire a new basketball coach took no action on the fate of interim coach Mike Davis. Alford says he has not been contacted by officials at Indiana. Alford apologized for blowing up at the media during the Big Ten Tournament when asked about the Indiana job. Alford says he wanted the focus to be on his team, not on questions about him leaving for Indiana. Alford said he did not want to spend his entire show talking about the situation. Reports over the weekend hinted that Alford and Iowa athletic director Bob Bowlsby are not getting along. Alford says that is not true. He says he has a “tremendous relationship” with Bowlsby.Alford has completed the second year of a five-year contract and had been discussing an extension when negotiations broke off. Alford says they agreed to table everything while the season was going on, so he could concentrate on coaching.This is Alford’s answer when pressed by one caller whether he would be the Iowa coach next season. He says “Right now I am the basketball coach at the University of Iowa, and that’s what I plan on doing.”
