A bill to close a loophole that allows firearms to be sold at gun shows, without a background check, will die this year. Senate leaders say the bill, which cleared a committee, will not be debated by the full Senate. Senator Maggie Tinsman of Davenport was one of just three Republicans who supported the bill. Tinsman says polls show 8 out of 10 people prefer to close the loophole.Gun owners are allowed to sell their own weapons at gun shows, without the required check to see if the buyer is a felon. The bill would require background checks even in those transactions, which critics say infringes on gun owners’ rights. Tinsman says the bill isn’t an assault on gun ownership.The bill was never even considered by the House.
