Fog blamed for dual train accident

March 22, 2001 By admin

Dense fog is being blamed for two vehicles hitting a train from each side at virtually the same time late last night, causing a derailment that left four people hurt in far northern Iowa’s Winnebago County. A Union Pacific grain train was hit almost simultaneously from the left and right about 11:45 p-m near Rake, very close the Minnesota border. 28-year-old Joshua Ben of Rake was driving a pickup truck and Cynthia Winter of Buffalo Center was driving a van. Two passengers in Winter’s van were also hurt, her children, ages 7 and 10. Red lights were reportedly flashing at the train crossing at the time of the accident.
