Harkin says his education package shoots for the moon

March 22, 2001 By admin

Iowa Senator Tom Harkin is offering a small preview today of a massive education reform package which he plans to unveil next week. Harkin, a democrat, compares the complexity and far-reaching potential of his proposal to NASA’s Apollo space program which landed Americans on the Moon in 1969.Calling it a Moonshot for Education, Harkin says the sweeping plan contains many goals, including: reducing class size, raising teacher education levels, making schools safe and modern, and making a college education more financially-accessible to everyone. The cost of Harkin’s plan is 350-billion dollars over ten years. He says that’s one-half of the amount of the new tax breaks President Bush proposes giving to the wealthiest one-percent of Americans.
