Four members of the animal rights group “People for the Ethical Treatment ofAnimals” will stage a protest this afternoon outside the National AnimalDisease Laboratory in Ames. “PETA” (pee-tuh) spokesman Bruce Friedrich(freed-rick) says the small group will also visit a Des Moines grocerystore at 11 o’clock. The four PETA members will wear bio-hazard suits asthey pass out free vegetarian food and recipes. Freidrich says theirmessage is “you’d have to be mad to eat meat.” Freidrich became avegetarian when he entered college in Grinnell, Iowa. Freidrich maintainsthat if you’re eating meat, you’re promoting cruelty to animals. Freidrichsays Iowans who make a living raising livestock should quote “do somethingelse.” Livestock producers say they use humane methods to raise theiranimals, and point to studies which show meat is a valuable source ofprotein and iron.
