Weather makes walking on ice a dangerous proposition

March 23, 2001 By admin

Now that spring is here, Iowans need to be extremely cautious about venturing onto frozen lakes or streams. Rod Slings, recreational safety supervisor for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, says many waterways are still ice-covered, but they’re dangerous to walk on.Slings says there can be simple indicators of the danger just by looking at the ice.Dark or honeycombed ice is likely to give way. Slings says Iowans who -do- take the risk to go ice fishing, snowmobiling or cross-country skiing on a frozen lake should make use of the “buddy system” by going with someone else.He says you should also tell someone where you’re going and when you plan to return, just in case you have a problem.
