The American Red Cross says your clock isn’t the only appliance you should work on this weekend as we spring ahead to standard time. Sherry Debartolo is the Emergency Services Coordinator for the Central Iowa Chapter of the Red Cross. Debartolo says you should put fresh batteries in your smoke detector as you turn the clock ahead an hour.Debartolo says bad batteries can cause you to lose more than an hour of time, as most people who’re injured or die in a fire did not have working smoke detectors in their home. She says the Red Cross is all too familiar with the aftermath of fires, as the group is usually on the scene right after the fire department. The Red Cross provides food, shelter and comfort for victims of fires. Debartolo says you should get into the habit of changing the batteries each time you change the time on your clock. The change from daylight savings time to standard time officially happens at 2 a-m Saturday.
