The current season for the Iowa State baseball team will be its last. Citing acute budget issues, Cyclone athletic director Bruce Van De Velde announced Monday that baseball along with men’s swimming and diving will be discontinued. Baseball coach Lyle Smith says he was aware the athletic department is having severe budget problems but the move was unexpected, and a complete shock. Smith says as a minor sport, being eliminated was always in the back of his mind. Smith says the Cyclone players are extremely disappointed. He says the number one goal is handling the emotion of the issue. Smith says his team will have to focus on the remainder of the season and do the best job they can.
