Mother Nature is being blamed for the latest fish kill in Iowa, not a chemical spill or livestock manure accident. Kevin Baskins, a spokesman for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, says the fish kill has been discovered on Meyers Lake in Evansdale, just east of Waterloo.Hundreds of carp, bass, bluegills and bullheads are dead. Baskins says the fish kill is not a surprise due to the harsh, long winter we’ve endured.Long-lingering, thick ice was covered by snow, preventing sunlight from reaching the plants on the lake bottom — plants that produce oxygen. Baskins says it’s a common discovery at this time of year, but the Waterloo-area fish kill is the biggest he’s aware of so far in 2001.The D-N-R will determine whether Meyers Lake will need to be restocked in a few more weeks.
