Iowa Senator Tom Harkin pushed what he called a “leave no child behind” proposal in the U-S Senate today. Harkin proposed that over the next 10 years, a quarter of a trillion dollars of federal money be spent on education. Harkin says President Bush’s budget outline shows Bush considers tax cuts more important than investments in education. He says the tax cut President Bush is proposing is 76 times greater than the investments provided for education. This past year, two cents of every federal dollar went to education. Harkin’s amendment to a budget bill called for expanding “Head Start” for three- and four-year-olds and he wants more federal money to rehab or replace crumbling schools. Harkin also wants new federal standards for teacher quality and more teachers to reduce classroom sizes. Harkin’s amendment passed on a 53-47 vote.
