Young sculptors, painters and potters from all over the state are facing off at an art contest in Cedar Falls today with the winners taking home college scholarships. Organizer Joann Schnabel, an art professor at the University of Northern Iowa, says about 50 high school students are setting up their works in the lobby of U-N-I’s Kamerick Art Building. She says scholarship winners will be chosen from eight semi-finalists interviewed. The top several artists, chosen by the U-N-I art department faculty, will win one- and four-year tuition scholarships to U-N-I. Professor Schnabel says there will be all forms of artwork in the competition, from painting to drawing to sculptures. Schnabel says this is an annual competition at U-N-I to lure the best high school artists in the state to pursue their dreams on the Cedar Falls campus. The exhibits will be open for viewing this morning and through part of the afternoon. Scholarship winners will be announced at 3:45 p-m.
