Potholes cause problems for drivers

April 6, 2001 By admin

Iowans are rejoicing in the departure of the snow and ice, but hating what’s left behind on the roads — and in the roads. Thousands of wrecks are caused every year by people swerving and hitting another car or running off the road — all to avoid potholes. Elizabeth Mosely, spokeswoman for the Insurance Information Institute, says as many as 13-thousand people are killed nationwide every year by swerving to avoid potholes or other road debris and causing a collision. Between 1994 and ’98, there were two Iowans killed in such wrecks. Mosely says drivers need to keep an eye on the road and other drivers. Mosely says if you hit a lot of potholes, make sure your tires aren’t damaged or leaking air and that they’re properly inflated.
