Severe Weather Awareness Week reminds us of the dangers

April 7, 2001 By admin

Severe weather is simply part of living in Iowa, but it can also be part of dying in Iowa. As part of Severe Weather Awareness Week, the experts are trying to familiarize people with the terms which could save their lives. National Weather Service meteorologist Jeff Wallenfang talks about why a severe weather watch is issued to alert the public for a potential thunderstorm development. Wallenfang, who works out of the National Weather Service office in Johnston, says watches are issued to keep you mindful of what the weather could do. Wallenfang says when a warning is issued, you should take cover immediately. He says the public can sometimes be a big help in identifying developing and dangerous weather conditions. Courses are offered through the weather service several times a year on becoming a trained “spotter.”
