The Iowa Department of Transportation is gearing up for the 2001 construction season. D-O-T spokesman Jerry Dickinson says most of the summer work includes patching highways, and there aren’t any large jobs that’ll shut down miles of roads. Even without the large projects, Dickinson says they’ll still be plenty of work going on. He says there’ll be about 500 long-term projects in operation at one time or another throughout the year. There’ll be several thousand short-term work projects. Dickinson says they’re again stressing the importance of staying alert in work zones.Dickinson says motorists face more danger than construction workers in a work zone. Over the past several years, 90-percent of the people killed in work zones have been drivers or passengers. You can see the D-O-T’s road work schedule on the web at: www.dot.state.ia.us.
