The Iowa Transportation Commission Tuesday approved a four-lane corridor in Dubuque connecting U-S Highway 20 with Highways 151/61. D-O-T engineer Dick Kautz says the 40-million dollar connection is on the southwest side of Dubuque. Kautz says the exact route for the highway is not set in stone. They’re studying several other alignments and are conducting archeological and environmental studies of those alternative routes. Kautz says the additional studies should be completed early next year. It’ll be at least four years before construction begins. The money for construction is in the D-O-T’s 2005 plan, and if construction starts at that time, it would be completed in 2007 or ’08. Kautz says the road would carry an estimated 11-thousand vehicles a day.
