With computers occupying our desks and our homes, is the bound book becoming obsolete? Mark Stumme, a reference librarian at Drake University, says books are here to stay. Stumme says books have been around for thousands of years, and he doesn’t think they’ll be quickly replaced.Still, Stumme says libraries have gone through some major technological changes in the last 10 years. He says most the process of looking up a book is done electronically. Stumme says students should not rely on the Internet all the time though because it doesn’t have all the answers. He says many students give up when they do not find a source on the Internet, when the book could possibly be right in the shelves. Stumme says other forms of the written word are only a supplement for the powerful idea of holding a book in your hands. This coming week, by the way, is “Reading Is Fun” week.
