Iowa State University students hope to create a record-breaking treat for their annual VEISHEA celebration. The students will try to get into the “Guinness Book of World Records” by baking a 25-hundred pound Rice Krispy treat for this weekend’s celebration. The crunchy treat will honor I-S-U grad Mildred Day, who helped invent the concoction while working for the Kellogg Company. Student Alyssa Armbrecht says it’s a pretty easy recipe that’s been multiplied for the record attempt. Students will use 820 pounds of Rice Krispies, 14-hundred-66 pounds of marshmallows and nearly 220 pounds of butter. They’ll mix up the ingredients in 50-pound kettles in a residence hall kitchen — making four batches every half hour. It’ll take eight hours to complete. Armbrecht says they’ll pour the mix into a 12-by-six-foot wood and plexiglass frame and then load it on a flatbed truck. Armbrecht says the treat will be featured in the VEISHEA parade.After the parade the treat will be cut up and sold to raise money for a charity in Ames. Mildred Day, the developer of the Rice Krispies treat, died in 1996 at the age of 92.
