Expert says check your lawn before pouring on fertilizer

As Iowa homeowners start striving for lush green lawns, an expert recommends they have their soil tested before applying expensive fertilizers. John Cresswell, nutrient management education coordinator for the Iowa State University Extension, says a soil test determines exactly what you need, so you don’t waste time or money — or hurt the environment. A soil test can be done at local lawn material shops. Cresswell says the soil tests should cost less than ten dollars, and are even free in some locations. He says the results of the test can be a great help to homeowners. Cresswell says 90-percent of Iowa lawns and gardens already have a sufficient amount of phosphorus.
