Transportation officials closed a Mississippi River bridge between Sabula, Iowa and Savanna, Illinois, last night due to high water levels. Dena Gray-Fisher of the Iowa D-O-T says officials monitor the water height on the bridge piers to make the call. Gray-Fisher says water doesn’t have to be lapping over a road, or a bridge, for it to be closed. Gray-Fisher says the structure of the bridge is also monitored. Several streets, roads and highways along the Mississippi corridor have been closed. Gray-Fisher says it’s not wise to drive on a road that has water over it because if it is deep enough and swift enough, it can quickly take the car off the roadway.Flood waters are making it difficult for gamblers in Marquette today. Clayton County dispatcher Karen Hallberg says the Isle of Capri Riverboat is closed today as they’re restricting traffic in the area. Marquette is open to local traffic only. Highway 18 between Marquette and McGregor is closed, as is Highway 76 north of Effigy Mounds. Hallberg says the sandbag dikes around Marquette appear to be holding up. She says they are being checked constantly. Hallberg says there was a short scare yesterday when a portion of the dike broke loose, but it was quickly repaired.
