U-of-I forum examines world problems

April 20, 2001 By admin

A three-day forum opens tonight at the University of Iowa gathering an international panel to analyze many of the world’s problems and search for solutions. The summit is called the Global Assembly on Human Rights to Health. Organizers are pulling in guest speakers from countries including Cuba, Germany, Denmark, Switzerland and Uganda to discuss things that’re worsening life on our planet, from war to disease to pollution. Dr. Maureen McCue is director of the U-of-I’s Global Health Studies Program. She says this conference will gather about 300 people from across Iowa, across the U-S and around the world. McCue says the assembly will produce a manifesto it’ll call the “Iowa City Declaration” to send to the United Nations. McCue says it’ll address “our collective responsibility to advance the human right to health.”
