Leaving the radio on is okay, but Iowans are being encouraged not to switch on their televisions this week. The Sioux City-based group, “Alternatives for Simple Living,” is promoting this as “Turn off T-V Week.” National coordinator Jerry Iverson says kids especially are hurt by too much T-V as they lose interest in the real world because T-V is so inviting.A survey by the group finds 93-percent of respondents believe T-V-watching displaces human interaction. Iverson’s group is putting out bumper stickers that read “Fight Prime Time. Read a Book.”Iverson says too many people use T-Vs as babysitters. He encourages parents to interact with their kids and read to them instead. He says if you can do without T-V for this week, try it for the month. For more information, surf to “www.tvturnoff.org”.
