A summit in West Des Moines today will focus on playground safety. The summit is part of “National Playground Safety Week” which begins today. Donna Thompson, the director of the National Program for Playground Safety at the University of Northern Iowa, organized the event. Thompson says officials from all 50 states have been invited to attend today’s summit to discuss ways to improve playground safety. She says over 200-thousand children are injured each year and 17 die while playing on playgrounds. Thompson says adults can help by policing playgrounds and reporting problems to school and city officials.Thompson says you should continue pushing until your playground is made safe. Thompson says you can view a set of guidelines for safe playgrounds at the N-P-P-S’ website at: www.uni.edu/playground. Or you can call 800-554-PLAY.
