Two Chicago Bulls stars who played their college careers at Iowa State are in Des Moines today, lending their support to a literacy campaign. First Lady Christie Vilsack calls Fred Hoiberg and Marcus Fizer “literacy champions.”Fizer, an All-American who led the Cyclones to the N-C-Double-A’s Elite Eight last year, says he considers himself a role model.Hoiberg, who grew up in Ames, says his own father was a role model for him, and he wants to do the same for his kids. He says he reads stories to his kids every night before they go to bed.Fizer and Hoiberg posed with their kids for a poster encouraging Iowans to read to their children. Fizer says he came back because he has a “commitment” to Iowa State.Hoiberg agrees, saying that there’s no better people in the country than the people of Iowa.Ninety-two million Americans struggle to read. One out of four adults can’t read at the sixth grade level.
