A former All-State basketball player from Cedar Rapids has won big in the Iowa Supreme Court. Bruce Sain played for Cedar Rapids Jefferson High School, and was offered a scholarship to play college ball at Northern Illinois University. Sain lost the scholarship when the N-C-Double-A ruled he hadn’t taken enough English classes in high school. Sain blames his high school guidance counselor, who told Sain a “Technical Communications” course he took met the N-C-Double-A standards. The state’s high court has ruled the school district “breached its duty” in getting Sain sound advice about his classes. The justices wrote that “students make life decisions” based on the advice of their high school counselors. One justice, however, said the ruling would discourage high school counselors from offering career advice altogether.
