Big Sioux River nears crest in Northwest Iowa

April 26, 2001 By admin

The Big Sioux River in the northwest corner of Iowa is expected to crest today. Lloyd Meyers monitors the river for the town of Akron. He hasn’t been able to get a manual reading of the river, but a satellite reading showed the level at 23-point-two-three. The flood stage on the Big Sioux is 16 feet. Meyers says the swollen river is making travel difficult, especially going west.Meyers says the town saw flooding in 1993, but not like this as they have water in places where it didn’t reach in 1993. The river is expected to crest sometime today.
