Earle Bruce was enjoying retirement from coaching in Florida. He was playing golf nearly everyday when a phone call from Jim Foster prompted Bruce to grab his clipboard and head to Des Moines. He was introduced, today as the new head coach of the struggling Iowa Barnstormers. He says it was time to retire from golf for the rest and relaxation of football. The Barnstormers are 2-4 in their first season in the Arena-two League. Bruce is confident in his coaching ability but says he is not a miracle worker, he says players win games.Bruce has had several head coaching stints, including a successful run at Iowa State from 1973 to 1978. He also spent one season at Northern Iowa in 1988. He replaces Art Haege who had been part of the organization since it began play seven years ago. Attendance has dwindled this season for the A-F2 version. The average attendance for the first two home games is just under three thousand.Barnstormer president Jim Foster says after seven years with the club he felt Haege deserved the chance to be a head coach. But Foster says “it didn’t work out at the level we need to be at right now.”
