June 14, 2001 By admin

A new aquatic center near Buffalo, Iowa, means campers will keep cool thissummer, but it also means people from nearby townswithout pools will have a place to swim. Frank Klipsch, president of theScott County Family “Y,” which owns the camp, says the Center replaces a60-year-old pool that leaked. It’s all part of a one-million-dollarrenovation of the facility, one of four projects in which the “Y” hasteamed up with Davenport schools and Genesis HealthSystem. Klipsch saysother communities are undertaking similar shared projects. The new facilityin Bettendorf will provide cardiac rehab for patients of the hospital, andserve kids and families in that part of the county as a full Y-M-C-A.Klipsch says similar projects are underway in Des Moines, Mason City andNewton. Three Des Moines area school districts are working with the city,Y-M-C-A and John R Grubb Center. In Mason City, the “Y” and hospital areworking together. In Newton, it’s the “Y” and the city. Klipsch says whilethe towns, hospitals and other sponsors benefit from the shared projects, the local Y-M-C-A contributes operating expertise and brings the communityin to use the new facility.
