Grassley not impressed with President’s immigrant amnesty plan

July 17, 2001 By admin

President Bush’s proposal to give residency to an estimated three million illegal Mexican immigrants living in the U-S isn’t getting a good review from Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley.Grassley says blanket amnesty is a “kick in the teeth to people who stand in line for years following the rules to come to the United States as a legal immigrant.” Grassley, a republican, says the practice has been tried in the past and only ended up encouraging illegal immigration.Grassley says he’d support a temporary “guest worker” program which he says would allow built-in protections that would not encourage illegal immigration and the breaking of laws.
