A new report from “Families U-S-A” finds 81 percent of low-income, uninsured American adults do not qualify for Medicaid. Lisa Davis-Cook of the Iowa Citizens Action Network says the rules for qualifying for Medicaid let too many poor Iowans fall through the cracks.Iowa’s Medicaid program covers parents who have annual incomes under about 13-thousand dollars — but it does NOT cover adults who aren’t parents, unless the adult’s disabled. Debra Stehr of the Iowa Citizens Action Network says private health insurance premiums are way out of her family’s price range. Stehr says not having insurance can break the budget if a person gets ill.The “Families U-S-A” report found that in 43 states, including Iowa, adults who are NOT parents — even if they’re penniless — do not qualify for Medicaid.
