Camp teaches kids how to use the heavy equipment

July 21, 2001 By admin

And now for something completely different. A summer camp that’s planned around the joys of…construction work. They bring in large equipment, let the kids crawl over the dump trucks, honk the horns and explore. Marty forth is summer camp program director at the YMCA camp in Boone, and he says construction is the theme of this camp session. He says there’s plenty of interest, and area builders who proposed it have contributed enough to take even more campers than they got. The third session of “Construction Camp” is winding up today at the Greater Des Moines YMCA Camp in Boone. Forth says like horseback or hiking, it’s just another theme for a summer getaway. This week they watched the demolition of an old stage at the campground, and helped build a new one. Forth says construction camp doesn’t have any special hazards. The kids are supervised by counselors and volunteer construction workers, and it’s no more dangerous than a bonfire. Forth says central Iowa builders proposed the unique theme for the camp, the only one of its kind in the nation.Associated General Contractors came to the Y to propose building interest in kids so when they’re older they consider it a real career. While this year’s session of construction camp is over, you could get in line for next year. Forth says support from the contractors has been generous, and the camp could take more kids.
