When the federal rebate check shows up in the mailbox, a lot of Iowans already have plans for spending the money. It’s been suggested, however, that the unexpected windfall be given to a good cause. Phyllis Lepke with the Iowa State University Foundation says many people find that as satisfying as spending the money on themselves.Lepke adds there are ways you can make sure your charitable donation is well spent. Just ask, how much of any gift goes to the charitable purpose, and how much goes just for more fundraising. And how do you make the final decision, who gets your donation? She says there are hundreds of charitable organizations out there. Lepke says most of us donate to organizations that we’re familiar with. From the Kidney Foundation to Planned Parenthood, the Humane Society or Big Brothers, Lepke says your best bet is to contact the charity directly and ask how to give a donation.
