Expert says eat State Fair food in moderation

August 9, 2001 By admin

A health expert says you can enjoy state fair food as long as you don’t go overboard. Many of the edible offerings at the Iowa State Fair are deep-fat fried, but Des Moines dietician Wendy Macke says there are also many healthy eats. Things such as turkey drumsticks — without the skin — corn on the cob, fresh fruit and anything grilled rather than fried. If you do have a hankering for a corn dog or funnel cake, Macke says you can eat some — just don’t act like the prize big boar. She says you should set limits, and don’t “graze” through the fair eating all the fried foods. Macke says it’s also important to keep yourself hydrated with plenty of beverages, the best being plain old water.Macke says if you are going to eat a lot, do some walking to burn off the extra calories.
