Meskwaki annual celebration underway

August 11, 2001 By admin

Descendants of Iowa’s original inhabitants are hosting an exhibition this weekend of their native dances, music and craftwork. The Meskwaki Tribe is holding its Powwow in Tama County, focused on the dances which date back many decades.Dave Old Bear Senior is helping plan the event. He says the powwow is very colorful and entertaining, while helping guests on the Indian settlement understand a little more about the culture.Old Bear says the dances are important to his people as they keep alive very old traditions. He says history tells of the fight against the Shawnee hundreds of years ago, and the Shawnee gave up their songs after being defeated. The powwows will be held today at 1:30 p-m and 7:30 p-m and tomorrow afternoon at the Tama County settlement. For more information, call 641-484-4678.
