Researchers seek to improve cancer treatments

August 29, 2001 By admin

Four University of Iowa researchers have won a grant to study ways to cut the dangerous side effects of cancer treatments. Professor Larry Oberly is the director of the project which won seven-point-seven million dollars from the National Cancer Institute. Oberly says the research involves cutting the oxygen damage to cells created by agents known as free radicals.Oberly’s portion of the program uses gene therapy to try and alter the amount of oxidants in the cancer cells. Oberly says the other three researchers will take different approaches to trying to improve the cancer treatments.
