Iowa’s Attorney General is urging college students to be cautious about acquiring credit cards. Attorney General Tom Miller says two-thirds of college students have at least one credit card, and the interest rates on those cards are often quite high.Miller’s own son is an Iowa State University student, and does not have a credit card as part of an agreement with his dad.Miller has contacted college student newspapers around the state, hoping to focus attention on the dangers of credit card debt. Miller says students don’t realize some employers check credit histories as part of the hiring process. He says that can hurt a student looking to get a job.Drake student body president Matt Elliott, a junior from Farragut, says credit cards are widely available to him and his peers.Some colleges, including Drake, forbid credit card companies from soliciting on campus, but such marketing can still be sent to students through the mail.
